Ataxic Cerebral Palsy

Ataxic cerebral palsy occurs in approximately 5 to 10 percent of children affected by cerebral palsy. This form of cerebral palsy affects the sense of balance and depth perception. Children affected with this form of cerebral palsy often have poor coordination; have an unsteady walk with a wide-based gait, place their feet unusually far apart; and experience difficulty when attempting quick or precise movements. They may also experience intention tremors which begin when a voluntary movement, such as reaching for an object, causes a trembling that affects the body part being used and that worsens as the individual gets nearer to the desired object.
